Nio's L90 model customers now have the option to choose a 60-kWh battery pack reduction.

Nio Onvo, the Chinese electric vehicle company, has introduced a smaller 60-kWh battery pack option for its flagship electric SUV, the L90. This new option is available exclusively through the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental purchase plan.

The L90, which was launched on July 31 and began deliveries on August 1, comes standard with an 85-kWh battery pack. The 60-kWh battery pack, on the other hand, provides a smaller capacity and therefore a shorter driving range, making it more suitable for primarily urban commuting with occasional longer trips.

The key differences between the 85-kWh and 60-kWh battery pack options are:

Battery Capacity and Range

The 85-kWh battery pack offers a longer CLTC range, approximately 570 to 605 kilometers depending on the drive configuration (rear-wheel vs. all-wheel drive). The 60-kWh battery pack, on the other hand, provides a shorter driving range.

Pricing and Payment Model

The 85-kWh pack is available either included in the vehicle purchase or via Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental, which charges a monthly fee of 899 yuan. The 60-kWh battery pack is available exclusively through the BaaS rental plan, lowering the vehicle's starting price to 179,800 yuan and reducing the monthly rental to 599 yuan, a 33% reduction compared to the 85-kWh pack’s rental fee.

Availability and Options for Existing Owners

Existing L90 owners who purchased via BaaS can opt to downgrade permanently to the 60-kWh battery pack and reduce their rental fee. However, those who bought the vehicle with the battery included cannot downgrade or receive refunds for the battery pack.

Intended Use Recommendations

Nio recommends the 85-kWh battery pack for the best driving experience, especially given the L90’s status as a large SUV. The 60-kWh option is positioned as a more affordable, urban-friendly choice.

Charging and Battery Swap Infrastructure

Both battery options benefit from Nio’s battery swap network, allowing quick battery swaps that mitigate range anxiety despite the smaller battery option’s lower capacity.

Nio Onvo aims to deliver over 10,000 L90s in August. More than 70% of the first batch of L90 owners chose the BaaS plan. It's important to note that the 60-kWh battery pack is not available as an option in the L90's configurator; customers need to contact sales representatives after locking their orders to adjust the battery pack option. Sharing services and reward programs for battery packs vary by region and time period.

If customers choose the permanent upgrade, they will need to pay a service fee of RMB 1 yuan if they upgrade within one year of delivery. For new buyers of the L90, the 60-kWh battery pack is directly available, but they must purchase the vehicle under the BaaS plan and contact a sales consultant to modify the configuration. The electric SUV has a starting price of RMB 265,800, including the battery pack, or RMB 179,800 under the BaaS plan. The monthly rental for the 60-kWh battery pack under the BaaS plan is RMB 599, a reduction of 33.37 percent compared to the 85-kWh battery pack's RMB 899 yuan.

  1. Nio Onvo has introduced a smaller 60-kWh battery pack option for its flagship electric SUV, the L90, which is available solely through the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental purchase plan.
  2. The 60-kWh battery pack offers a shorter driving range compared to the standard 85-kWh battery pack, making it more suitable for primarily urban commuting with occasional longer trips.
  3. The 60-kWh battery pack, with a monthly rental fee of 599 yuan, is cheaper than the 85-kWh pack's rental fee, providing a 33% reduction in cost for customers opting for the BaaS plan.
  4. Existing L90 owners who purchased via the BaaS plan can opt to downgrade permanently to the 60-kWh battery pack and reduce their rental fee, while those who bought the vehicle with the battery included cannot downgrade or receive refunds for the battery pack.
