Nvidia announces a £2 billion investment in Britain's artificial intelligence startup sector

In a significant move for the UK's artificial intelligence (AI) industry, tech giants Nvidia, OpenAI, Intel, and AI startup Nscale, along with several other investors, are pouring £13.7 billion ($18.4 billion) into the country's AI landscape. The investment, totalling £11 billion for AI factories and £2 billion for the AI startup scene, is set to bring new capital and advanced AI infrastructure to major UK hubs like London, Oxford, Cambridge, and Manchester. This investment marks the 'big bang of a new industrial revolution,' according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The establishment of Stargate U.K., a joint venture featuring Nvidia's Blackwell Ultra GPUs, will operate in Nscale's UK data centers by 2026. Stargate U.K. will house up to 120,000 of Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs, a testament to the scale of the investment. Jensen Huang believes that the UK is ideally positioned for AI investment, citing world-class universities, bold startups, leading researchers, and cutting-edge supercomputing as key factors. He stated that with this investment, Nvidia aims to empower the UK to lead the next wave of AI innovation. The involvement of ChatGPT maker OpenAI in the investment was not initially mentioned, but their partnership adds to the project's potential for AI advancements. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has hailed Nvidia's investment as a 'major vote of confidence' in the UK. He believes that the investment will create jobs, spark new industries, and ensure the UK remains at the forefront of global AI leadership. Other key investors in the British AI startup scene and the establishment of AI factories in the UK include Thrive Capital, GV, Alphabet (invested in Isomorphic Labs), Lightspeed Venture Partners, General Catalyst, O.G. Venture Partners, Rosello, Lakestar, and Atomico (investors in Neko Health). European players like the Dutch semiconductor equipment supplier ASML are also involved in AI investments. The investments will be joined by asset managers and venture capital firms, including Accel, Air Street Capital, Balderton, Hoxton Ventures, and Phoenix Court. This substantial investment in the UK's AI sector is expected to drive technological advancements, foster innovation, and position the UK as a global leader in AI technology.
