OpenAI Introduces Age Verification to Protect Minors on Its Services

OpenAI has announced significant changes to its services to protect minors. On October 5, 2023, CEO Sam Altman published a blog post detailing the introduction of an age verification system and identity verification for OpenAI services. OpenAI is developing an age prediction system that estimates users' ages based on their interactions with ChatGPT. When ChatGPT is uncertain if a user is over 18, it will apply settings designed for users under 18. These settings restrict discussions about sensitive topics like suicide or self-harm and implement an alert system for parents. The company is rolling out these systems to safeguard minors using its services. Altman stated that OpenAI will prioritize safety over privacy and freedom for teens. Identity verification will be required when the age prediction system cannot definitively determine a user's age. OpenAI will also provide adults with methods to prove their age and unlock adult capabilities if they are initially treated as under 18. This announcement comes amidst an inquiry by the Federal Trade Commission into AI chatbots and child safety. It follows a lawsuit by parents of a teenager who died by suicide, allegedly assisted by OpenAI's chatbot. OpenAI's new systems aim to create a safer environment for minors using its services. The age prediction and identity verification systems, along with restricted settings for underage users, are set to launch soon. These changes reflect the company's commitment to prioritizing safety, even if it means limiting some freedoms.
