Photography enthusiasts rejoice! Laowa has compacted a 1.5x macro lens with a focal length of 180mm into an exceptionally lightweight design, similar to a bread loaf, and it features (somewhat) autofocus capabilities.
In a recent launch, Laowa unveiled the full-frame Laowa 180mm f/4.5 1.5x Ultra Macro, a new addition to their lineup that now includes a longer telephoto option for macro photography. This lens is designed for close-up photography, making it an ideal choice for capturing more skittish insects.
The Laowa 180mm lens is crafted with 12 elements in 9 groups and 9 aperture blades. An apochromatic design in the lens helps reduce chromatic aberrations, enhancing sharpness and colour accuracy. The lens is available in three compatible mounts: Sony E, Nikon Z, and Canon EF (DSLR). On these mounts, the autofocus is available from 1.5m to infinity.
However, it's worth noting that the autofocus capabilities are not available in the Canon mirrorless RF mount and L-Mount. Instead, these variants are manual focus only. The Sony E variant of the 180mm lens is larger and heavier, weighing 521.6g /18.4 oz and measuring 134.4mm / 5.3 inches. In contrast, the Canon EF variant weighs about 484g / 17 oz and measures 88.4mm / 3.5 inches.
Laowa is renowned for its macro lenses, including probe lenses and optics with 2x magnification. The 180mm lens offers more background compression compared to wider optics, providing a unique perspective for your macro photography.
The latest Laowa 180mm lens retails for $499 / £499 / AU$939, making it an affordable option for photographers seeking high-quality macro lenses. With its autofocus capabilities, this lens offers a convenient solution for capturing sharp, detailed images of small subjects at a distance.
