Updated Skoda Kodiaq Introduces Plug-in Hybrid Version
Plug-in Hybrid Skoda Kodiaq Tops Sales Charts With Dual Power Source
The popular Skoda Kodiaq, initially launched in 2016, has received a new edition, which has been commercially available for several months. The latest development is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid variant, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the automaker. This version boasts the capability of covering over 100 kilometers solely on electric power.
The new Kodiaq, boasting a length of 4.76 meters, is the largest SUV within the Skoda universe, competing in the premium midsize class. Despite its size, it is still 10 centimeters shorter than the flagship Enyaq, Skoda's purely electric model. This new addition to the Kodiaq lineup is partially electric, owing to a plug-in hybrid setup.
The larger 25.7kWh battery, double the capacity of its predecessor, enables the Kodiaq plug-in hybrid to operate solely on electric power for more than 100 kilometers. This battery technology is now shared with the luxury Superb sedan, Skoda's longest model at 4.90 meters.
Skoda has now adopted the dual-heart principle for itself, following in the footsteps of its competitors. Cars with rechargeable batteries and combustion engines were once considered niche, with disadvantages such as carrying two complete drive systems and the need for original charging cables. However, modern plug-in models offer decent ranges and faster charging, making them more attractive to consumers.
A Strong Contender for Mass Adoption
The loyal fanbase of the Kodiaq may need to be won over, as the initial interest in the predecessor model was limited. But with the 2025 edition, Skoda could witness a breakthrough in the plug-in hybrid segment. The new model has gained traction, even among ordinary professionals who commute from suburban homes to city offices and only require electric power for their daily commute on weekdays. For these drivers, a full battery can be achieved within 2.5 hours at home and 25 minutes at a 50kW fast charger.
The total output of the front-wheel drive corresponds to that of the powerful all-wheel gasoline engine at 204 PS (150kW). Speed enthusiasts can reach speeds of up to 210 km/h in the Kodiaq or accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds by drawing upon the combined power of both engines.
Design Overhaul and Modern Interior
The significantly extended body, thanks to designer refinements, offers an optical impact. Characteristic features include the Skoda-shaped radiator grille with vertical lamellae resembling a sculpture, as well as the two-story headlight eyes with full LED matrix. The overall appearance is slightly more aggressive than the predecessor model.
Inside, previous drivers will find themselves in unfamiliar territory. The gearshift lever for the standard seven-speed DSG automatic has moved from the center console to the right side of the steering column, where it is now operated by slight turning movements, similar to VW's ID models.
The central attraction is a 12.9-inch monitor for navigation, apps, and touchscreen operating functions. Three rotary switches with LED interiors also allow classic manual control, such as for climate and heating. Oliver Stefani, Chief Designer, comments, "The combination of manual and digital control elements meets the wishes of many customers and is as intuitive as it is comfortable."
Behind the Steering Wheel
A 10.25-inch display provides the necessary driving data, with a clear separation between the two screens. Despite this separation, the large monitor's generous dimensions and excellent representation are likely to be accepted. In the basic versions of the new Kodiaq, the central display is two inches smaller. A head-up display for the windshield can also be ordered.
Enhanced Performance and Efficiency
The new smoothness in the large Skoda SUV is notable. The 1.5-liter engine, which operates in hybrid mode, is the only engine detectable amidst the four possible combustion engines. This Kodiaq also comes with a mild hybrid setup, powered by a small battery that supplies various electrical consumers such as the starter. The model is also equipped with cylinder deactivation, which shuts off two of the four cylinders when they are not needed.
Connoisseurs may appreciate the tour in the top models, featuring a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, all-wheel drive, and electronic damping. These features ensure a responsive and precise steering feel, reminiscent of traditional driving experiences, as well as flawless brakes when the Kodiaq is brought to a stop by gravity.
A Step Ahead in the Registration Hit Parades
Skoda's rivals from around the globe are keenly awaiting the new Kodiaq's arrival. They come from China as well as from the parent company. The fully electric Enyaq or its smaller brother, Enqroq, reign as bestsellers among electric vehicles in Europe.
