Puerto Rico's First Solar Module Factory to Create 800+ Jobs, Boost Economy
Puerto Rico is set to host its first solar module manufacturing plant, thanks to domestic solar producer Solx. Governor Jenniffer González Colón has endorsed the project, lauding it as a boon for local project management and a stride towards sustainable energy solutions.
Solx will invest a total of $64 million in the project, with the initial phase costing $25 million. The facility, to be situated in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, is expected to create more than 200 jobs during construction and an estimated 600 or more jobs across supporting industries.
The factory will have an initial output capacity of 1 GW, producing 72-cell N-type modules for the utility-scale market. Solx will source steel frames for the modules from Origami Solar, including large-format G12 modules. Notably, Solx will supply the cell for its own module assembly plant in Puerto Rico. The initial offering will include a 625 W module, slated for a soon-to-be-announced partner. Looking ahead, Solx plans to expand its production to include residential solar panels by 2027.
The Puerto Rico government, under Governor Jenniffer González Colón, has welcomed Solx's investment, citing its potential to strengthen the economy and build energy solutions. With a total investment of $64 million, the project is expected to provide a significant economic boost and support 100% domestic manufacturing.
