Qatar Airways & China Southern Boost China-Middle East Flights

Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines are set to bolster their partnership, with Qatar Airways expanding its codeshare on China Southern's Beijing Daxing-Doha route from 16 October 2025. This move follows a significant increase in Chinese passengers using Hamad International Airport in Doha.

From January to August, over 1.1 million Chinese passengers travelled through Hamad International Airport, with a notable 2% coming from Shenzhen. This growth is partly attributed to Shenzhen Airlines' new direct service between Doha and Shenzhen, launched in October 2024. The thrice-weekly service has strengthened connectivity between the two cities.

The expanded codeshare and direct flights aim to boost passenger and cargo flows between China, the Middle East, and beyond. Hamad International Airport already offers direct flights to nine Chinese cities, providing access to over 120 international destinations via its hub.

The partnership also extends to a framework for cooperation between Qatar's MATAR and Shenzhen Capital Group, focusing on market analytics, route planning, and technology deployment. Furthermore, a Sister Airport agreement has been signed between Hamad International Airport and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport to enhance air connectivity and collaboration.

Hamad International Airport's recent expansion in 2024, increasing its terminal area by 14% to 845,000m² and surpassing an annual capacity of 65 million passengers, has positioned it well to accommodate this growth. The airport's network expansion discussions with airline partners at Routes World 2025 in Hong Kong will further develop its global reach.

The expanded codeshare and direct flights between Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines, along with the Sister Airport agreement and cooperation framework, are set to significantly enhance passenger and cargo flows between China and the Middle East. Both parties are committed to strengthening this partnership, with Shenzhen Airport Group deputy general manager Chen Fanhua expressing dedication to expanding Shenzhen Airport's global network and enhancing its hub functions.
