Quick Update: Enhanced Rotation and Paint Features with Latest ML Technologies in Silhouette 2024.5 Release

In the realm of video editing and compositing, the latest release of Silhouette, version 2024.5, is making waves with its focus on machine learning (ML) powered tools and improved workflow capabilities.

The UI of Silhouette 2024.5 has been refined to ensure responsiveness during playback and when navigating through render-intensive nodes/trees. Notable additions include progress bars, sliders, and the new Node Highlighting feature, which provides a tree render status by highlighting each node as it processes using a blue outline.

One of the key highlights of Silhouette 2024.5 is the introduction of several AI-driven tools. Matte Assist ML automates the creation of fast animated mattes from a single frame using local ML models, significantly speeding up the rotoscoping process. The Mask ML node enables point-and-click matte generation driven by ML object segmentation, simplifying mask creation.

For more precise tracking, the Optical Flow ML Tracker generates optical flow data usable to track shapes, objects, or points, now enhanced with realistic motion blur for more natural tracking. Retime ML produces high-quality time warps with support for animated ramping, improving retiming effects for video sequences.

The new Roto Markup Tool introduces trackable strokes and linked notes to streamline roto quality assurance and collaboration.

Silhouette 2024.5 also boasts 143 VFX nodes with full stereoscopic support, providing a comprehensive, GPU-accelerated compositing environment for complex VFX tasks such as paint, roto, keying, tracking, warping, morphing, and OCIO color management.

Other notable features include the Motion Blur Node, which allows for quick addition of realistic motion blur driven by Optical Flow ML models, and the new Markup tool, which allows for detailed notes to be left directly on shots for improved collaboration among roto artists and supervisors.

Silhouette 2024.5 is now available as a standalone application and plugin for Adobe After Effects/Premiere Pro, Autodesk Flame, Blackmagic Resolve/Fusion, and Foundry Nuke. Existing customers with an active subscription or upgrade & support plan can upgrade to Silhouette 2024.5 for free.

Users can download a free trial of Silhouette through the Boris FX Hub, and to update their installer, they should use the Boris FX Hub as well. Pricing for Silhouette 2024.5 starts at $495/year or $100/month.

For those seeking guidance on using the Mask ML node together with Matte Assist ML to produce precise animated mattes quickly, director of content Ben Brownlee shares top tips. The new release also includes a powerful action for remapping the tracking reference frame without manual corrections.

Additionally, Silhouette 2024.5 includes Tracking & Effects Updates, such as new versions of Mocha Pro and Particle Illusion, and Module Upgrades in the form of EXR v3.1 and OpenColorIO v2.2.
