The iconic Vyšehrad Railway Bridge in Prague, a landmark steeped in history, is currently under threat of demolition. However, a sensitive restoration and upgrade proposal is awaiting a formal trigger from the Minister of Transport to proceed. Both UNESCO and the local government have expressed strong support for preserving the original bridge, emphasising its heritage value.

The proposed repair and enhancement plan aims to retain the bridge's original early 20th-century features while adding a third track alongside the existing two. This third track is designed as a discreet, contemporary addition running parallel to the restored original structure, ensuring it does not distract from the historic aesthetic. The original pedestrian walkway will be preserved along the outer edge of the existing tracks.

The restoration methodology will use rivets extensively, mirroring the original steelwork techniques, although some bolts will be used where necessary. The project works closely with heritage consultants and UNESCO to maintain authenticity. Beyond the track addition, the project includes broader urban development plans beneath the railway arches to revitalise currently unused space.

Importantly, the restoration and upgrade are engineered to extend the bridge’s lifespan by 120 years. This represents a significant longevity enhancement while respecting the original bridge's character and structural integrity.

A grassroots initiative named Vyšehrad Bridge Foundation enlisted UK civil engineer Ian Firth to lead a feasibility study for the bridge's restoration. When he joined the project, the bridge was in poor condition due to lack of maintenance for over 60 years. The analysis process for the bridge's restoration consisted of two phases: a high-level analysis and a detailed inspection of significant parts.

The design of the repaired bridge will retain the original features while adding a third track and giving the bridge a new 120-year life span. This will be achieved by using rivets wherever visible and blending contemporary steelwork with the original. Only 15% of the infrastructure on the lower levels, where the train runs, needs replacing, according to the analysis.

The proposed solution aims to preserve the historic bridge while meeting contemporary transportation demands through an efficient and cost-effective reconstruction plan. The bridge spans the Vltava River and is part of the railway infrastructure connecting Prague Main Station with Smíchov Station.

In April 2025, UNESCO declared the bridge an immovable cultural monument and an integral part of the listed Prague Heritage Reservation site. The UNESCO/ICOMOS Advisory Mission released an official report in April 2025, confirming that the Vyšehrad Railway Bridge contributes to the Outstanding Universal Value of the historic centre of Prague's world heritage and that demolition would cause unacceptable harm to its authenticity and integrity.

With the Minister of Transport's statement, the restoration process can begin, ensuring the Vyšehrad Railway Bridge remains a key and functional landmark in Prague's rail network for over a century to come. The urban development beneath the railway arches seeks to rejuvenate the currently unused area, creating a vibrant space that complements the historic beauty of the restored bridge.
