Rapid Growth of Apple Smartphones: IDC Report Shows 35% Year-over-Year Increase in First Half of 2025
In a significant development for the Indian electronics industry, the Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has highlighted Apple's progress in the Indian electronics manufacturing story. According to Vaishnaw, most advanced countries will soon be receiving Apple iPhones manufactured in India.
The growth in the smartphone market during the recent period has been diverse across different city tiers. Tier-I cities led in sales growth, with Apple and Motorola emerging as the fastest-growing brands. However, tier-II and tier-III cities experienced a minor dip, while tier-IV cities held the largest share of total units sold.
The overall smartphone demand had a modest year-on-year (y-o-y) growth of only 2% during the same period. Notably, Vivo led the smartphone market, recording a 25.2% y-o-y growth, followed by Samsung (declining with 2.5% y-o-y) and Oppo.
Interestingly, the ₹10,000-20,000 price segment accounted for the majority of units sold during the period. On the other hand, the premium ₹50,000+ smartphone segment recorded the highest growth.
Apple's growth in India has been particularly noteworthy. The tech giant's smartphones grew by 35% y-o-y during the first half (H1 2025) of this year. This growth is reflected in the production of the iPhone 17 series, with Apple assembling a significant portion of these devices in India.
Foxconn, the biggest producer of iPhones, has commenced production of the iPhone 17 series at its second-largest manufacturing unit based in Bengaluru, India. The US tech giant is producing the iPhone 17 series at this facility, which is its second-largest unit.
Apple's increased production in India is not just limited to the iPhone 17 series. The company assembled 60% more iPhones, worth around $22 billion, in India in the year ended March 31, 2025. These iPhones are currently being shipped to meet the requirements of the US market.
It's worth mentioning that the production of the iPhone 17 series in India is operating under informal restrictions imposed by China. Despite these challenges, the initial sales of the iPhone 17 series have beaten those of the previous variant.
The IDC report also stated that the smartphone market grew 2% y-o-y in H1 2025, with 60 million units shipped. This growth, while modest, underscores the continued demand for smartphones in India.
In conclusion, Apple's progress in the Indian electronics manufacturing sector is a testament to the country's growing prowess in this field. With the production of the iPhone 17 series in India, Apple is not only strengthening its presence in the Indian market but also contributing to the growth of the Indian electronics industry.
