Germany, famous for its Autobahns, is home to a unique and elusive traffic sign that graces mere 13 instances along its highways – but only about 140 kilometers north of Munich's A9. Given this rarity, it's no surprise that most folks, especially curious tourists traversing the A9 between Pfaffenhofen and Kreuz Holledau, might feel bewildered and question their correct response to this symbol.
So, what's the deal?
The answer is simple: largely, you can choose to disregard it. This is unusual in standard road traffic regulations but to some extent possible. The enigmatic signs featuring a black-and-white pattern are part of the "Digital Test Field Autobahn" (DTA) which commenced in 2016 on the A9. Far from indicating a restriction or rule, these signs, dubbed "landmark" signs, serve as orientation aids for autonomous vehicles being tested within this testing area.
The Purpose Behind the Odd Sign
The signs aid state-of-the-art camera systems fitted within these self-driving vehicles in pinpointing their exact position with unprecedented accuracy using the landmark signs.
Back in 2016, when the signs were introduced, Germany’s then Federal Minister of Transport Alexander Dobrindt noted: "Automated and networked vehicles require precise steering. Coupled with advanced sensor technology and a centimeter-accurate digital map, the new signs are yet another step towards the advent of the first fully digitalized and fully connected road."
On its information pages, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport and the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) provide a map showcasing the locations of research projects like the DTA - with 26 test fields and approximately 142 projects registered across Germany as of August 2021.
The Utilization of the DTA in Action
The DTA is championed as a technology-agnostic invitation for the industry and research community. It has since established itself as a proving ground for future advancements. A scientific evaluation conducted by the BASt last year deemed the DTA a success.
