Record-breaking Achievement: Over 300,000 Active Digital Driving Licenses in Austria
In a significant leap forward for digital identity management, the Republic of Austria has launched the "eID" app, one of the first electronic identity (eID) solutions in the field. With youniqx Identity AG, a pioneer in digital identities, playing a pivotal role, the new app offers a secure, flexible, and user-friendly digital identity management system.
The "eID" app, developed by youniqx Identity AG, includes a digital driver's license for Austria, making it easier and more secure for citizens to manage their ID documents. The app stores users' digital IDs, including their driver's license, on their mobile device, protected by strong encryption and device-level authentication such as Face ID or PIN. This ensures that the identity data is always controlled by the user and not stored on centralized servers or the cloud, enhancing privacy and security.
The Austrian "eID" solution is fully compliant with ICAO and EU regulations, ensuring legal validity and interoperability across national and international systems. It is modular, allowing stepwise upgrades without disrupting the existing infrastructure, and is compatible with practically all current equipment used for identity verification, supporting smooth integration with national eID ecosystems.
The system also enables remote and secure issuing of digital IDs via web interfaces, facilitating fast, efficient, and secure e-signature-based transactions by authorities. This approach supports digital onboarding and enhances efficiency in processing identity documents. Comprehensive biometric enrolment software integrates biometric data capture with national databases to verify identity securely and accurately, improving the reliability of the digital ID issuance process.
Youniqx Identity AG's expertise significantly shaped the development of the Austrian eID application. They leveraged their knowledge in creating secure and user-centric digital identity frameworks, applied experience in modular, scalable identity management systems, and contributed to the development of secure enrollment processes and remote issuance capabilities.
The Liechtenstein digital identity "eID.li" was also adapted from the "MIA" app and launched in April 2020. The development time for adapting "eID.li" was approximately a few months. OeSD, the Austrian organisation for digitalisation, has bundled its expertise in secure digital identity in youniqx Identity AG since 2017.
Citizens can present the digital driver's license offline, making it useful during traffic control and as a recognised identification document for certain services. The digital driver's license is one of the use cases covered by "MIA", which has been successfully launched in two European countries.
