Renewable energy-powered, off-grid heavy-duty truck operation in Australia now active and running
In a groundbreaking move for sustainable logistics in Australia, Centurion, an Australian logistics firm, has successfully deployed a fully operational fleet of electric trucks powered by renewable energy. The fleet, consisting of 30 Mercedes-Benz eActros trucks, is now servicing the Perth metropolitan area.
Joshua S. Hill, a Melbourne-based journalist, reported on the deployment, highlighting Centurion's commitment to reducing emissions while maintaining reliability and service quality. The project, funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) under the Future Fuels Program, represents a significant milestone in Centurion's decarbonization efforts.
The trucks, which include 25 rigid eActros 300 units and 5 eActros prime movers, are powered by a combination of 4.4 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar power and 10.3 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage. Two charging hubs, commissioned at Centurion's Perth Airport depot, ensure the fleet's charging needs are met entirely off-grid.
Each charging site has a combined capacity of 15 dual-port 75 kilowatt (kW) and 150kW chargers. A backup generator, running on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), is in place to ensure uninterrupted charging and reliability.
Justin Cardaci, CEO of Centurion, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "This demonstrates that sustainable freight is achievable today with the right investment and partnerships." He further added that the project marks a significant milestone in their decarbonisation journey.
The $29-$36 million initiative is a pioneering model for clean transport infrastructure in Australia. With the addition of 10 more Mercedes-Benz eActros trucks earlier this month, Centurion's fleet now stands at 30. Daniel Whitehead, president and CEO of Daimler Truck Australia Pacific, expressed his excitement about the expansion, emphasising the importance of such initiatives for a sustainable future.
