In the bustling streets of the Bronx, New York, on May 3, 1935, a young Ron Popeil was born. This charismatic entrepreneur would go on to revolutionize the world of television marketing and home shopping.

After leaving the University of Illinois after a year and a half, Popeil found solace and opportunity at Chicago's Maxwell Street. Here, he began selling kitchen products, marking the start of his successful career in retail.

In 1951, Popeil founded Ronco Teleproducts Inc., a company that would become synonymous with innovative kitchen and household products. His first foray into TV marketing came in 1963 with the Ronco Spray Gun, a high-pressure hose nozzle.

Over the next two decades, Popeil introduced a variety of products on late-night TV, including the Dial-O-Matic, the Buttoneer, the Pocket Fisherman, Mr. Microphone, and many more. These products, marketed through infomercials, set the wheels in motion for the modern $2.5 billion home shopping industry.

Popeil's most significant achievement, however, was the invention of the infomercial itself. His groundbreaking approach to direct-response television marketing changed the face of retail, making it possible for everyday consumers to purchase products directly from their homes.

The initial public offering of Ronco Teleproducts Inc. took place in August 1969, and the company's stock soared up the NYSE. Popeil became a multimillionaire overnight.

However, in 1984, Ronco was forced into bankruptcy due to a bank seizing the company's inventory. Undeterred, Popeil bought back the inventory and returned to the county-fair circuit.

In 1989, Popeil launched his television comeback with a food dehydrator. Sales of his latest project, the Showtime Rotisserie & BBQ, are going strong.

Despite his success, Popeil has often talked about retiring but admits he probably never will. He continues to be a fixture in the world of television marketing, living up to his nickname as a "jet-setting millionaire."

While there are no detailed accounts of close personal or strategic partnerships between Ron Popeil, QVC president Doug Briggs, and USA Networks CEO Barry Diller, their professional spheres did overlap in the television-based retail and marketing industry.

Popeil's contributions to the world of television marketing and home shopping cannot be overstated. From the Ronco Spray Gun to the Showtime Rotisserie & BBQ, his innovative products have left an indelible mark on consumer culture.
