Salem Carriers Launches Ambitious Electric Truck Initiative

Salem Carriers, based in Salem, Massachusetts, has initiated an ambitious electric truck project, collaborating with Electrada and DTFS for charging infrastructure and charging-as-a-service (CaaS). The 'Electrify Salem' project aims to decarbonize Salem Carriers' operations in Massachusetts.

The partnership involves Salem Carriers charging its Freightliner eCascadia trucks at its Statesville depot and en route at the Duke Energy/Electrada mobility microgrid in Mount Holly. Dennis Giff, general manager at Salem Carriers, praises the unified approach of DTFS and Electrada in integrating electric vehicles into their operations.

DTNA, the parent company of Freightliner, is leading this transition. Its Portland manufacturing plant produces the eCascadia and eM2, with a goal to achieve CO2-neutral production at all remaining truck manufacturing plants by 2025. DTNA has opened 'Electric Island' in Portland to accelerate the development and deployment of zero-emission commercial vehicles. Last November, DTNA introduced four eCascadia trucks in the northeast US for moving production and aftermarket parts. Additionally, DTNA has delivered two eCascadias to Transportes Esteban in Mexico, with charging support from the second Electric Island facility. Jeff Allen, senior vice-president of operations and specialty vehicles at DTNA, emphasizes the company's commitment to decarbonization throughout the supply chain.

DTNA is also involved in a battery manufacturing joint venture, Amplify Cell Technologies, with Paccar, Accelera, and EVE Energy. This venture aims to produce battery cells for commercial and industrial applications in North America, further strengthening the electric truck ecosystem.

With 'Electrify Salem', Salem Carriers, Electrada, and DTFS are setting a new standard for sustainable freight transport in Massachusetts. The initiative demonstrates a collective commitment to reducing emissions and accelerating the adoption of electric trucks, marking a significant step towards a greener future.
