Singaporean law firm Oon & Bazul announces the return of their shipping lawyer as a partner.
Singapore-based law firm Oon & Bazul has strengthened its shipping and international trade practice with the addition of Fazlina Sapuan as a partner. Fazlina, who began her career at Oon & Bazul before leaving in 2017, brings over 12 years of experience in maritime legal matters to the firm.
Fazlina's areas of expertise include vessel collisions, allisions, onboard fires, hijacking and piracy incidents, and hull and machinery damage claims. She also has extensive experience in both contentious and non-contentious maritime matters.
Bazul Ashhab, the managing partner of Oon & Bazul, expressed delight at Fazlina's return to the firm, stating that her addition will be a great asset to both the practice and the firm's clients. Prakaash Silvam, head of Oon & Bazul's shipping and international trade practice, echoed this sentiment, saying that Fazlina's expertise and reputation in the industry will significantly enhance the firm's capabilities.
Fazlina's arrival at Oon & Bazul coincides with an increase in the volume of instructions the firm is receiving. This growth is likely due to several key factors, including the firm's deep expertise and reputation in shipping law, its strategic location in Singapore, the expanding maritime trade, and the increasing complexity of international shipping regulations.
The continued growth of Oon & Bazul's market-leading shipping practice is further highlighted by Fazlina's arrival. This is evidenced by the firm now having 14 partners, following the addition of Fazlina and Perry Elizabeth Wong.
Notably, two new law firms have been established by partners who previously worked at Oon & Bazul - Dauntless Chambers and Watershed Law. Suresh Divyanathan, Aaron Leong, and Rachel Leong left Oon & Bazul to launch Dauntless Chambers, while Christian Teo established Watershed Law after leaving the firm.
Fazlina's addition to the partnership at Oon & Bazul marks the firm's second such hire this year. Previously, the firm hired lateral partner Tan Hui Li from another Singapore-based law firm.
Before rejoining Oon & Bazul, Fazlina spent a stint at specialist P&I insurer The Shipowners' Club and was legal counsel at Scandinavian dry bulk operator Western Bulk. Most recently, she was legal counsel at Western Bulk. Fazlina specializes in contentious wet shipping disputes and risk management.
The growth of Oon & Bazul's shipping practice underscores the firm's commitment to providing top-tier legal services to clients operating in the shipping industry. With Fazlina's expertise and the firm's strategic positioning, Oon & Bazul is well-positioned to continue serving major shipping companies, financiers, and insurers in Asia and beyond.
- Fazlina's return to Oon & Bazul has expanded the firm's capabilities in litigation areas such as vessel collisions, hijacking, and piracy incidents, thanks to her expertise in data-and-cloud-computing technology and her extensive experience in both contentious and non-contentious maritime matters.
- As Oon & Bazul continues to grow, they have strengthened their position in the market by recruiting partners like Fazlina, who brings with her experience in shipping law, technology, and litigation, and expands the firm's service offerings to major shipping companies, financiers, and insurers, both in Singapore and internationally.
