Improving Traffic and Enhancing Safety in Thiruvananthapuram with TSCCC

The Traffic Safety and City Command Centre (TSCCC) in Thiruvananthapuram is revolutionizing urban management, integrating advanced technology for traffic regulation, law enforcement, and crime prevention.

At the heart of this smart urban hub is an Intelligent Traffic Management System that operates at 32 high-traffic intersections. This system includes Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras for vehicle tracking and Red-Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras for enforcing signal discipline.

The TSCCC is equipped with a network of real-time high-definition surveillance cameras, providing a 360-degree monitoring capability. The city-wide CCTV surveillance network has 93 strategic points with fixed bullet cameras and high-zoom pan-tilt-zoom cameras.

One of the key features of the TSCCC is the adaptive traffic signals that adjust in real-time to improve vehicle flow and reduce congestion. Additionally, AI-driven analytics are used to monitor traffic patterns and detect violations such as red-light jumping, illegal parking, and roadside garbage dumping.

The TSCCC acts as a centralized control and surveillance tool for policing, providing high-quality video evidence that aids in rapid incident response, investigation, and crime prevention. This makes the TSCCC an essential component for Thiruvananthapuram's Smart City initiative, aimed at leveraging technology for safer and smarter urban living.

However, it's worth noting that around 50% of the surveillance cameras are not functional, which limits the system’s effectiveness in continuous real-time monitoring and quick response to violations. Despite these issues, the TSCCC remains a critical tool for improving situational awareness for both traffic managers and law enforcement agencies in Thiruvanthapuram.

In summary, the TSCCC improves traffic flow, supports law enforcement with automated detection and evidence collection, and enhances crime prevention through city-wide intelligent surveillance and prompt incident management. The TSCCC project has been integrated for the command control centre, providing camera feeds 24/7, making it an integral part of Thiruvananthapuram's smart city landscape.
