Software Glitch in Brandenburg Elections: BBSF Gains Extra Seat
A software glitch in the Brandenburg municipal elections in the United States has been corrected, leading to a change in seat allocation for the Bürgerbündnis Sydower Fließ (BBSF). Initially, Anja Lenke was awarded a seat, but the error was later rectified, and the seat went to Matthias Kuhnt of the BBSF.
The error occurred during the application of the Hare-Niemeyer procedure, as prescribed in the election regulations. The software, used uniformly throughout the state and nationwide in municipalities, initially miscalculated the seat allocation in the municipality of Sydower Fließ. This resulted in the wrong person, Anja Lenke, being awarded a seat.
Harald Höppner of the BBSF spent the night calculating to understand the election regulations and informed the election commissioner about the discrepancy. The state ministry eventually sided with Höppner, confirming it was a software problem. The correction led to the BBSF receiving four seats instead of the initial three out of ten. The State Election Commissioner confirmed the correction but stated it was an exceptional case not covered by the software.
The software used to record and present results in the Brandenburg municipal elections appears to have been faulty in at least one case. The error has been corrected, and the BBSF has gained an additional seat due to the rectification. The state ministry and the election commissioner have both acknowledged the software issue.
