SpaceX & T-Mobile Activate Starlink for Hurricane Helene Connectivity
SpaceX and T-Mobile have secured emergency authorization from the FCC to activate Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capabilities in areas affected by Hurricane Helene. This move aims to provide crucial connectivity during the crisis.
While SpaceX's direct-to-cell constellation is not yet fully deployed, services will be offered on a best-effort basis. The companies plan to conduct tests for basic texting (SMS) capabilities on T-Mobile's network in the region.
Before this authorization, no search results indicated who had activated the direct-to-cell capabilities of Starlink satellites in the affected areas. Now, Starlink satellites are already broadcasting emergency alerts to cell phones across North Carolina.
SpaceX and T-Mobile's emergency efforts ensure critical communication channels remain open during Hurricane Helene. Despite the partial deployment of SpaceX's direct-to-cell constellation, basic services are being provided to support those in need.
