SpaceX's Ninth Test Flight of Starship Scheduled for May 27 Utilizing Reused Rocket Booster
**SpaceX's Starship Ninth Flight Test Aims for Key Milestones on May 27**
Preparations are underway for SpaceX's ninth flight test of the Starship, scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, 2025. This exciting test marks another significant step in SpaceX's mission to revolutionise space travel.
The ninth flight test will see the Starship and Super Heavy rocket duo make their way to the launch pad at Starbase. A live webcast will begin approximately 30 minutes before liftoff on SpaceX.com, X (@SpaceX), and the X TV app. Liftoff is expected as early as 6:30 p.m. CT.
The key objectives for this mission include several firsts. Starship will attempt its first payload deployment, aiming to deploy simulated Starlink satellites from the payload bay. However, a pressure regulation issue inside the nosecone in the near-vacuum of space prevented the deployment of the dummy payloads during the previous test.
Another major goal is to demonstrate the first relight of a Raptor engine in space on this Block 2 Starship. Unfortunately, a propellant leak led to a loss of attitude control, preventing the engine from being reignited during the coast phase.
The flight will also test Starship’s reentry maneuvers, thermal protection system (TPS), and flap aerodynamics. The Super Heavy booster, Booster 14, successfully performed a boost-back and entry burn in the previous test, but the upper stage (Ship 35) lost attitude control during reentry and ultimately broke up before landing.
This test is also historic as it marks the first reuse of a Super Heavy booster by SpaceX. Booster 14, which previously launched and returned during the seventh test, will once again take to the skies.
The Starship will attempt a controlled flip and new high-angle descent technique to slow its return using atmospheric drag. These maneuvers are designed to test future flight profiles and improve fuel efficiency on future missions. Upon reentry, the upper stage of Starship will attempt a landing following its descent.
However, it's important to note that the schedule for the ninth flight test remains dynamic and subject to change. Pictures of the Starship and Super Heavy on the launch pad were shared by SpaceX on the previous day, offering a glimpse of the excitement to come.
As always, SpaceX aims to boost reliability and reduce turnaround time between launches following a detailed inspection and hardware updates from Flight 8. The vehicle will not return to the launch site but instead follow a path toward an offshore landing zone for safety while gathering critical flight data.
Stay tuned for more updates on SpaceX's ninth flight test of Starship. The countdown is on!
