The Kiel Canal, a vital waterway connecting the North Sea with the Baltic Sea, is undergoing an expansion project. The total cost of the expansion is estimated to be approximately 500 million euros.

The first phase of the expansion will focus on dredging a four-kilometer section to a depth of four meters. This phase is expected to cost around 120 million euros and is currently underway. The dredger "Peter the Great", a green cutter suction dredger from the Belgian company Deme, is involved in the extraction of soil from the depths.

In the second phase, the depth will be increased to eleven meters. The bed of the canal will also be widened from 44 meters to 70 meters. The second and subsequent phases of the expansion are expected to cost an additional 380 million euros. The completion of all phases is expected by the end of the decade.

Despite the ongoing expansion, no large-scale Schinkel-related expansion project details have been recently reported. For precise, up-to-date project information, including costs, timelines, and environmental impacts, official German government or infrastructure agency releases would be the most authoritative sources.

It is worth noting that the expansion will result in the excavation of a total of 2.5 million cubic meters of dredged material, with one million eleven hundred thousand cubic meters of this being transported to the Baltic Sea.

The Kiel Canal expansion is a significant project that will enhance the efficiency and capacity of this important waterway, benefiting both commercial shipping and the economy as a whole. However, it is essential to monitor its progress and potential environmental impacts closely to ensure its long-term sustainability.

The expansion project of the Kiel Canal, a crucial waterway for the finance and trade industry, involves subsequent phases, one of which is the second phase, where the depth will be increased to eleven meters and the bed widened, costing an additional 380 million euros. This significant technology-driven project, benefiting both commercial shipping and the economy, will also generate 2.5 million cubic meters of dredged material, with one million eleven hundred thousand cubic meters transported to the Baltic Sea.
