Super NES library expands with the addition of Mario Paint
The Nintendo Switch has once again opened up a world of nostalgia with the return of the classic game, Mario Paint, now available through Nintendo Switch Online. But that's not all - the service also offers a plethora of features for both retro and modern gaming enthusiasts.
To enjoy the online features, a Nintendo Account is essential, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) is required for some features like the Nintendo Music app and GameChat. The Music app, accessible at no additional charge for Nintendo Switch Online members, offers a vast collection of music from iconic games such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and many more.
The Mario Paint game, a replica of the 1992 Super NES classic, comes packed with a variety of drawing tools. These include three sizes of pencil tools for varying line thickness, a paint tool for colouring areas, pre-existing sprites called "Stamps" featuring objects and characters from Super Mario World, and a colour palette for easy selection of hues.
The game also offers a straight line tool for precision, the ability to add numbers and letters from a text menu, an erase tool, various screen wipe transitions, and the option to fill the entire screen with a specific colour, texture, or sprite.
Moreover, the game supports mouse controls, allowing players to use a USB mouse or the Joy-Con 2 as a mouse for precise input on the Switch 2. An Undo action and a Stamp mode for creating and saving custom sprites are also included. The Stamp mode even allows for the creation of very thin one-pixel wide stamps that can act as pen tools thinner than the standard pencil.
The Colorising Book feature includes pre-drawn designs and character art to colour in, while an animation suite allows for the creation of short looping scenes using your drawings. A music composer tool is also available, enabling the creation or recreation of tunes to include in your projects.
The game can be played on a Nintendo Switch system, offering a unique experience for both new and old players. However, it's unclear if the Nintendo Music service is required to enjoy tunes from the game.
In addition to Mario Paint, Nintendo Switch Online membership provides access to over 150 classic games, including the F-ZEROTM 99 game as part of special offers. The service also includes GameChat, a feature that allows users to hang out with friends and family online, but is only available until March 31, 2026, without a membership. Afterwards, a membership will be required to use GameChat.
So, whether you're a fan of the original Mario Paint or looking to explore a new creative outlet, Nintendo Switch Online offers a wealth of opportunities to bring your imagination to life.
