SwRI Produces Sustainable Aviation Fuel for Greener Skies
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has successfully produced and evaluated sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from electrofuels. This marks a significant step towards greener skies.
SwRI's multidisciplinary team, comprising chemical engineers, fuels specialists, and propulsion experts, collaborated to overcome technical hurdles. They started with electrofuels, created using green hydrogen derived from water electrolysis and captured carbon dioxide or monoxide. These were then refined through hydroprocessing reactions to produce the SAF.
The produced SAF was blended and rigorously tested on a jet engine test stand. Emissions and particulate data were collected to support the aviation industry's emissions reduction goals. SwRI's team characterized the SAF, comparing it with conventional jet fuel and a commercial SAF blend to ensure it met ASTM quality and EPA emissions guidelines.
SwRI's Executive Vice President Walt Downing expressed enthusiasm about offering comprehensive solutions across the entire SAF development cycle. The team focused on production, characterization, and testing of the SAF. Francesco Di Sabatino, a group leader in SwRI's Mechanical Engineering Division, will present these findings at the Sustainable Aviation Futures Congress in Houston, October 14-16.
