Tech giant MediaTek adopts advanced technology from TSMC for the design of its latest top-tier processor
TSMC's 2-Nanometer Process Powers MediaTek's Next-Gen Flagship SoC
In a significant move, MediaTek Inc, Taiwan's largest chip designer, has announced its adoption of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's (TSMC) advanced 2-nanometer process for its next flagship system-on-a-chip (SoC).
Kevin Zhang, TSMC's deputy co-chief operating officer and senior vice president of business development and global sales, highlighted the partnership as a testament to the strength of their relationship. MediaTek's president, Joe Chen, echoed similar sentiments in a statement.
The 2-nanometer process marks TSMC's entry into nanosheet transistor architecture, a commitment to upgrading technologies, enhancing computing performance, and improving energy efficiency. This advanced process is expected to be the world's most advanced in density and energy efficiency.
MediaTek's strategy behind this adoption is to cement its global position in cutting-edge semiconductor technologies. The solutions provided by MediaTek's flagship chips range from edge applications to cloud services.
International media have speculated that the upcoming SoC could be the Dimensity 9600, MediaTek's next-generation mobile flagship SoC. However, MediaTek did not reveal the name of the SoC in its statement.
The SoC, currently unnamed, has completed the tape-out stage and is expected to enter mass production in the second half of this year, with availability at the end of next year. This timeline aligns with other prominent customers, such as Apple Inc, Nvidia Corp, and Advanced Micro Devices Inc, who are also adopting TSMC's 2-nanometer process.
The partnership between MediaTek and TSMC has enabled MediaTek's flagship chips to deliver highly efficient performance. The solutions offered by the upcoming SoC are expected to further boost MediaTek's position in the global semiconductor market.
TSMC's 2-nanometer process offers full-node improvements in performance and power consumption. The partnership between MediaTek and TSMC reflects TSMC's ambition to support a broad range of applications. The collaboration between these two industry giants is a step towards a more efficient and powerful future in semiconductor technology.
