Tesla Introduces Autonomous Robotaxis Taxi Services in Austin Starting June
Tesla's Autonomous Future Takes Shape in Austin
Tesla, the electric vehicle pioneer, is making strides in its mission to revolutionise transportation with the rollout of its Robotaxi network. Austin, Texas, a hub for Tesla's operations since 2021, is poised to serve as the testing ground for this innovative venture.
In June 2025, Tesla launched a pilot programme for its Robotaxi service in Austin, using modified Model Y vehicles with safety drivers. The futuristic Cybercab, unveiled by Elon Musk in October 2024, is planned as Tesla’s future fully driverless taxi, but has not yet been deployed in the pilot.
Since its initial launch, Tesla has expanded the service area in Austin multiple times and improved the app and service coverage. In August 2025, the company obtained a Texas rideshare license, paving the way for the Robotaxi service to open to the public imminently.
The Cybercab, a compact, driverless vehicle with a minimalist design, is expected to lead the charge in Tesla's Robotaxi fleet in Austin. This fully autonomous vehicle, which does not have a steering wheel or pedals, relies on Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology.
Tesla's ambitious goal is to expand its Robotaxi network, covering roughly 50% of the U.S. population by the end of 2025. Austin is the principal launch and testing ground for this ambitious expansion.
The Cybercab is a cornerstone of Tesla's vision for the future of transportation, envisioned to provide on-demand transportation services as part of the Robotaxi network. Tesla thanked the City of Austin and the Texas Department of Transportation for their support in navigating the regulatory and infrastructure challenges for autonomous vehicles in Austin.
Gigafactory Texas, located near Austin, produces Model Ys and Cybertrucks, further solidifying Austin's role in Tesla's autonomous future. The launch of the Robotaxi network in Austin is an exciting development, marking a significant step towards safe, low-cost, and premium point-to-point electric transport.
