Tesla's sales in Norway surge by an impressive 213% in May
Tesla Sees Record Sales in Norway Amidst Electric Vehicle Boom
Tesla is once again making waves in the Norwegian auto market, recording its strongest monthly performance of the year in May 2025. The electric vehicle (EV) giant has delivered 7,381 vehicles in Norway year-to-date, marking an 8.3% increase over the first five months of 2024.
The significant surge in Tesla sales in May can be attributed to several factors. Norway's EV market is extremely mature, with electric-drive vehicles dominating nearly 97% of new registrations. This environment favors Tesla's fully electric offerings, particularly the Model Y.
In May, Norway recorded 4,415 new EV registrations, a strong increase compared to previous months. Tesla's revised Model Y accounted for a substantial share—over one-quarter (27.2%)—of all new registrations in June, indicating a surge starting in May as well.
The Model Y was the best-selling EV model by a wide margin, far ahead of competitors such as the Toyota bZ4X and Volkswagen ID.4, which had much lower unit sales. Tesla's brand strength and desirability in Norway are exceptionally high, allowing them to capture around 27% market share among all new car sales in June.
Tesla's strong rebound in Norway comes after a sluggish start to the year, partly attributed to growing competition from Chinese and European EV brands. To regain traction, Tesla introduced customer incentives across Europe, including zero percent interest financing in Norway for new Model Y deliveries made before the end of June.
The surge in sales was primarily driven by the new Model Y, which accounted for 2,346 units, or nearly 90% of Tesla's monthly volume. The Model Y was the top-selling vehicle in Norway in May 2025. This is a significant leap from Tesla's three-month trailing average of 11.8%.
The overall Norwegian market for electric cars continues to grow rapidly, supported by policies favoring EVs and customers’ environmental preferences. As a result, Tesla ended the month as Norway's third-best-selling auto brand.
This year's deliveries already account for nearly one-third of Tesla's total deliveries in Norway for the entirety of 2024. The nation's focus on electric vehicles has led to Tesla being the third-best-selling auto brand in Norway.
The Model 3 also saw a notable recovery, with 253 units sold, representing an 87% jump compared to May 2024. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 92.7% of all new vehicle registrations in Norway so far this year, further supporting Tesla's position in the market.
Norway continues its transition away from internal combustion engines, with BEVs accounting for the majority of new vehicle registrations. In May 2025, Tesla experienced a 213% year-over-year sales increase in Norway, setting the stage for a promising second quarter. With sales for April and May already up 123% compared to the same period in the previous quarter, the current second quarter in Norway is shaping up to be Tesla's third-best on record.
Tesla's strong sales in Norway can be linked to the country's maturing electric vehicle market, where battery electric vehicles dominate nearly 97% of new registrations. The surge in sales is also influenced by the popularity of Tesla's electric vehicles, particularly the Model Y, which became the top-selling EV model in May 2025. Additionally, the increasing demand for technology-advanced vehicles, such as electric cars, is contributing to the growth of Tesla's sales in Norway.
