Test Launch of Agni 5: Essential Details on Indonesia's Medium-Range Ballistic Missile

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced the successful test-fire of the Agni-5, India's most advanced long-range missile, on August 20, 2025. The launch was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command.

The Agni-5, a part of India's Agni series, is an intermediate-range ballistic missile with a range exceeding 5,000 kilometres. During its first test in April 19, 2012 from the integrated test range in Chandipur, Odisha, the missile traversed over 5,000 km, reaching a maximum altitude of 600 km.

The Agni-5 is built with lightweight composite materials for improved efficiency and reliability. It is equipped with modern navigation, guidance, warhead, and propulsion technologies, making it a formidable addition to India's nuclear arsenal.

One of the key features of the Agni-5 is its Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, which enables the missile to deliver multiple warheads at different targets. This technology was demonstrated for the first time during India's MIRVed test launch of Agni-5 on March 11, 2024, from Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu.

The Agni series forms the backbone of India's land-based nuclear deterrent. The successful test-fires of the Agni-5 validate all operational and technical parameters, ensuring its readiness to safeguard the nation's security interests.

It is worth noting that an improved version of the Agni-5 with an extended range of up to 7,500 kilometres is reportedly under development. This would further bolster India's strategic defence capabilities.

The Agni-5, with its advanced technology and long range, is a testament to India's growing prowess in the field of missile technology. The successful test-fire of the Agni-5 underscores India's commitment to maintaining a credible minimum deterrent, ensuring peace and stability in the region.
