The Wheel of Time video game is indeed in development and (presumably) will take place.

The Wheel of Time franchise is set to expand into a new realm with the announcement of an open-world role-playing game (RPG) in development by iwot Studios' new games division, based in Montreal. The game, expected to release after a projected three-year development process starting in 2025, could potentially hit the shelves around 2028[1].

The game is planned to launch on PC and consoles, though specific console platforms have yet to be revealed. The developers, iwot Studios, acquired the Wheel of Time rights back in 2004 when it was known as Red Eagle Entertainment.

The game's development is a significant endeavour, with the first instalment considered the most challenging due to proper scope and ensuring a high-quality release. The team behind the game, led by iwot co-founder Rick Selvage and game studio head Craig Alexander, are committed to the project and aim to deliver on their commitments in a way that fans of the franchise will find thrilling.

Selvage and Alexander have stated their intention to treat the game similarly to the Wheel of Time show and upcoming prequel movie, ensuring a faithful adaptation of the beloved fantasy series. However, the game will not be a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game due to the franchise's character-centric nature. Instead, it may resemble Baldur's Gate 3, offering a single-player experience with a dash of multiplayer elements.

The game's development team is currently in the pre-production phase, looking for leadership, a team to build out the prototype, and planning to hire a staff of up to 300 for the full project development. Sequels, DLC, and expansion paths are part of the plan for the game, hinting at a long-term commitment to the Wheel of Time universe.

Despite the excitement surrounding the project, there has been skepticism among Wheel of Time fans about the adaptation. However, the team behind the game remains optimistic and dedicated to creating a game that will do justice to Robert Jordan's epic series.
