Rumors of TikTok's potential ban in 2025 gain traction as President Trump unveils the latest developments, with the looming threat casting a shadow over the popular social media platform.

TikTok's potential ban in 2025 receives significant attention with Trump offering a key update as the prohibition drawing near.

In a recent development, Howard Lutnick, the U.S. Commerce Secretary, has announced that a deal is on the brink of being officially announced to keep TikTok operational in the US, despite potential ban threats. The deal, if approved, would see Americans owning and controlling the technology and algorithm of TikTok.

However, the fate of TikTok remains uncertain as the deal's approval hinges on China's agreement. If China fails to approve the sale, TikTok may go dark, a scenario that was previously mentioned in July 2020 when President Trump tried to ban the app through an executive order, citing national security threats.

The new TikTok application for US users, planned for a September launch, is a part of the proposed deal. This separate app is being developed to comply with the law of Congress, which forces intermediary companies such as the Apple store and Google to stop providing access to TikTok if it is deemed a foreign adversary controlled application.

The deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest the US assets of TikTok has been extended to 17 September, and there's speculation it could be extended again. The stakes are high, with 170 million TikTok users in the US eagerly awaiting news about the app's future.

President Trump's attempts to ban TikTok in 2020 are still fresh in many minds. However, his decision to join TikTok in July 2024, just before his re-election bid, was widely regarded as an attempt to reach out to young Gen Z voters. Trump garnered over three million followers in just two days after joining the platform.

Recent progress in trade tariff agreements between Beijing and Washington in July has set a 10 November extension. Whether this will impact the TikTok deal remains to be seen.

As the deadline approaches, the world watches as negotiations continue, hoping for a resolution that will keep TikTok shining bright in the US.
