The much-anticipated Woven City, a testbed for advanced mobility and urban living solutions, is set to open its doors on September 25, 2021, in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan.

Toyota Motor Corp. has announced that the experimental city will serve as a base for testing innovative technologies and services. Initially, around 360 people related to Toyota will move into a 47,000-square-meter section of the site.

The Woven City project is not limited to Toyota-related companies; it also includes participation from 12 other companies. These new additions include 10 Toyota Group companies and 2 non-Toyota Group companies. The original 7 Inventors announced in January 2025 have been joined by these new partners, increasing the total number of participating companies to 19.

The Woven City is designed for testing advanced mobility-related technologies and services, with a focus on creating a sustainable and connected urban environment. The participating Inventors will leverage Toyota’s manufacturing expertise and Woven by Toyota’s advanced software platforms to co-create and rapidly prototype innovations.

The new Inventors will collaborate closely with the residents and visitors of Woven City, providing vital user feedback that will help accelerate the development of products and services focused on safety, connectivity, urban logistics, and well-being, emphasising real-world usability.

Phase 1 construction of Woven City was completed in October 2024, with the official launch planned for September 25, 2025. The project aims to redefine mobility broadly, considering not only transportation but also movement of goods, data, energy, and human connection, positioning Woven City as a pioneer for integrated, human-centric urban ecosystems.

From fiscal 2026 or later, general visitors will be accepted. The planned expansion of Woven City will increase its size to approximately 700,000 square meters, accommodating around 2,000 residents in the future.

Toyota's Woven City is more than just a testbed for mobility solutions; it's a hub for innovation, where ideas are brought to life and the future of urban living is shaped.

With the aim of accelerating the development of safety, connectivity, urban logistics, and well-being solutions, the automotive industry giant, Toyota Motor Corp, invites the involvement of 19 partner companies from various sectors like technology and finance, to collaborate on the Woven City project. These partnerships will contribute to testing and co-creating innovative technologies and urban living solutions beyond just transportation, including industries like transportation, technology, and finance.

As Toyota's Woven City expands from fiscal 2026, it will not only accommodate a larger population of residents, but also open its doors to general visitors, making it a hub for innovation and the future of connected, human-centric urban ecosystems that encompass transportation, technology, finance, and automotive industries.
