Trail Running Enthusiasts Engage in 'Mafate X Hike' Event, Organized by HOKA Sportswear Brand, Utilizing Search and Rescue Technologies
In the realm of outdoor gear, safety and performance go hand in hand. One brand that understands this is HOKA, which has recently integrated RECCO technology into its Mafate X trail runner.
The Mafate X Hike is a new version of the shoe, designed for long haul adventures in remote wilderness. It comes equipped with a RECCO locator chip, a potentially lifesaving feature that aids Search and Rescue (SAR) teams in finding lost hikers who may not be easily visible from the air.
This reflective material, known as RECCO, serves as a mirror for radio signals. It's already incorporated into gear by many large outdoor brands, including HOKA, in recent years. RECCO is used by more than 900 ski patrols and mountain rescue organisations in 32 countries, making it an essential tool for those venturing into the great outdoors.
The Mafate X Hike is not the first shoe to feature RECCO reflectors. Brands such as Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Decathlon, SCARPA, and Jack Wolfskin have also embraced this technology. Jack Wolfskin, for instance, offers backpacks like the Wolftrail RECCO, equipped with the RECCO locator chip.
The Mafate X Hike offers additional protection with its neoprene collar and burrito tongue. This makes it a robust and capable shoe for long-distance trail running. However, it's worth noting that the cost of the Mafate X Hike is $250, $25 more than the regular Mafate X ($225).
While the Hoka Mafate 5 has not been reviewed on our website as of the time of this article, last year we did review the SCARPA Moraine, the first lightweight hiking boot to incorporate RECCO. In 2020, FORLOH became the first hunting brand to use RECCO in its apparel.
For more information about RECCO-equipped gear, you can visit the company's website. The purpose of RECCO is to help SAR teams locate lost hikers in scenarios where helicopter searches may be blocked, such as rocky mountainous terrain.
