Spotify Introduces High-Fidelity 'Lossless' Audio Setting
Spotify has announced the rollout of a new high-fidelity audio setting for its Premium subscribers over the next month. This development comes as a response to the growing demand for better audio quality in digital music streaming.
The new 'lossless' audio setting will allow users to enjoy their music in a richer, more detailed manner. Unlike lossy formats such as MP3 and AAC, which are compressed to be efficient, lossless formats like FLAC and ALAC reproduce the song as it was originally recorded, featuring every bit of musical information from the songs' master tracks.
To enable the lossless audio setting, users can navigate to the settings menu in the desktop or mobile app and select 'media quality,' then the 'lossless' option.
Manufacturers such as Sennheiser, KEF, and Astell & Kern offer wired or Hi-Res compatible headphones and speakers capable of delivering high-quality sound that can be used with Spotify Premium's lossless streaming for optimal audio quality. Brands like iFi Audio produce compact high-fidelity DACs and amplifiers enhancing sound quality, suitable for wired connections to headphones or speakers supporting Hi-Res audio.
While Spotify's new offering is a significant step forward, it's important to note that not all sound systems can handle lossless audio. Ensure your surround sound system or headphones support FLAC and ALAC lossless formats, as well as 24-bit/48kHz, 24-bit/96kHz, or 24-bit/192kHz audio.
It's also worth mentioning that services like Tidal, Deezer, and Amazon Music already had the lossless audio option in 2021. Arch-competitor Apple Music introduced its lossless audio option a few months after Spotify's announcement.
Matt Jancer, a veteran author in the industry with over 15 years of experience, thinks highly of the new development. Living in New York City, Jancer has written for more than 15 magazines, including Car and Driver, Outside, Esquire, Smithsonian, Playboy, and Wired. Jancer, who believes everyone needs at least one hobby they have none of their ego invested into, enjoys writing for enjoyment, riding motorcycles, mountain climbing out West, making guitar noises, and cooking in his spare time.
The 'lossless' option on Spotify requires a Spotify Premium subscription, which costs $12 per month for an individual plan. With this upgrade, users can now immerse themselves in the unadulterated sound of their favourite songs, making every note count.
However, it's important to note that most streaming services cannot play lossless audio through Bluetooth headphones or speakers without compressing it. Users are advised to use a wired pair of headphones or Hi-Res-compatible wireless headphones that can connect to devices via a 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi connection for the best audio experience.
Lossless audio files are cherished for their richness and depth of sound, offering a listening experience that comes as close as possible to the original recording. With Spotify's new offering, music lovers can now enjoy their favourite tracks in a whole new light.
