Travel company Treepz, based in Nigeria, debuts in Canada
Treepz, a Nigerian-based corporate travel startup that initially operated as Plentywaka, has made a significant stride in its international expansion journey by launching its operations in Canada. This marks Treepz's entry into the North American market, with the University of Toronto's sponsored programme as its first corporate travel client in Canada.
The company, which has rebranded since September 2021, has established its Global Headquarters in Ontario. It benefits from strong local support, including the Mayor of Brampton, and partnerships with organizations like the World Trade Centre’s TAP programme by Black Entrepreneurship Alliance and the Brampton Entrepreneurs programme.
Treepz operates in 25 cities across five continents: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and now Canada. It serves both corporate and personal mobility needs through a digital platform that aggregates and digitalizes bus and other travel services. The startup has so far served over 6 million customers in these African countries and secured partnerships with universities and governments, such as Miva Open University in Nigeria.
In a statement, Onyeka Akumah, founder and CEO of Treepz, said, "The launch of Treepz Canada is a strong positive statement of intent for African startups." He further added that this milestone is a significant step in Treepz's global journey.
Beyond Africa, Treepz has expanded its corporate travel solutions across South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Rwanda, offering services including flights, hotels, and rentals. This broader African market presence, coupled with its North American launch, demonstrates Treepz's commitment to providing tech-driven, scalable corporate travel solutions globally.
The company has also secured backing from investors such as Google, SOSV, Techstars, BRK Capital, and Shock Ventures, further boosting its growth and service adoption.
In May, Treepz partnered with Miva Open University, Nigeria's premier open university, to become its official transportation provider, covering key cities like Lagos, Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, and Jos.
Treepz's expansion strategy involves building on its strong African base to scale internationally, beginning with Canada as a strategic North American foothold, supported by local government and entrepreneurial initiatives.
