U.S. Firm, Canoo, to Introduce Electric Vehicles in the United Kingdom Market
Canoo Establishes UK Operations at Bicester Motion
Canoo, the high-tech mobility company specializing in electric cargo vehicles, has chosen Bicester Motion as its UK location. The former WWII Royal Air Force base will serve as Canoo's operations, customer, and activation center in Europe.
The decision to locate at Bicester Motion underscores the US-UK partnership built on shared values, economic collaboration, and mutual trust. Canoo's move into the UK is a significant step in its global expansion strategy.
Bicester Motion was selected due to its rich history in automotive innovation and its proximity to more than 50 automotive brands. The space at Bicester Motion is scheduled to open in October.
The UK is a global leader in EV adoption, with a ZEV mandate requiring 80% of new vehicles and 70% of new vans to be zero-emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the UK saw 17 consecutive months of growth in the LCV market earlier this year, with the small van market particularly strong in 2024, demand up 42.0% year-to-date.
Tony Aquila, the CEO of Canoo, has achieved success in the UK market through his leadership at Solera and CAP-HPI. Aquila's career in the UK includes acquiring various businesses, creating hundreds of new jobs, and generating over one hundred million dollars of annualized revenue.
Canoo's strategy includes pilots followed by the rollout of vehicles, and it will work directly with customers to create solutions that meet their specific demands. The company's vehicles are designed with steer-by-wire technology and a modular platform that maximizes vehicle interior space and is customizable for a wide range of business and government applications.
The activation center at Bicester Motion will serve as an environment for customers to experience and test drive Canoo's right-hand drive commercial vans. Canoo Technologies UK Limited, operating the activation center as of October 2024, will take a customer-centric approach, focusing on configuring vehicles to meet the diverse needs of commercial and government fleet customers.
Daniel Geoghegan, CEO of Bicester Motion, welcomes Canoo to the UK and expresses excitement about their shared vision for the future of mobility. Tony Aquila also stated that the UK activation center at Bicester Motion will allow the company to leverage local expertise and strengthen commercial operations in the high-potential market.
Canoo, headquartered in Justin, Texas, has teams located in California, Michigan, and Oklahoma, and world-class vehicle and battery facilities in Oklahoma City. The company's establishment in the UK market underscores its commitment to a global future in the EV industry.
