UK PHEV Sales Surge: Nearly Twice Diesel Cars, Businesses Lead the Way

Sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are surging in the UK, with nearly twice as many sold as diesel cars. Over 80% of these vehicles are snapped up by businesses, attracted by their low tax implications and versatile driving range.

PHEVs combine battery power with fuel filling, allowing for both short, electric trips and longer journeys using the combustion engine. This flexibility, along with low CO2 emissions, makes them an appealing choice for company car drivers. Pre-warming the cabin before driving can help maintain battery efficiency and extend the vehicle's electric range.

Running costs of PHEVs vary greatly depending on driving habits, charging frequency, and the source of electricity. However, installing a home charger is the easiest way to reduce fuel bills. For instance, charging at home can cost around 6p per electric mile, compared to about 12p using a public charger. Moreover, switching to an off-peak electricity tariff can lower charging costs to as low as 2p per mile.

Popular PHEV models in the UK include the MG3 Hybrid+, Toyota Yaris, Mitsubishi, Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo, and Opel Corsa. MG, in particular, is praised as a significant newcomer in the market.

The UK's PHEV market is booming, with businesses leading the charge. By pre-warming their cabins and charging at home, especially with off-peak tariffs, drivers can maximise their vehicles' efficiency and minimise their running costs.
