In a groundbreaking development for the automotive industry, the 2025 Aito M9 is set to launch on March 20, with pre-sale prices starting at 66,400 USD. This innovative vehicle marked the first successful satellite communication rescue operation in the industry.
On July 25th, an Aito M9 owner found themselves in a precarious situation in Qinghai province's Delingha region, a remote area within the vast uninhabited region of Hoh Xil, located in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The vehicle had suffered a flat tire in an uninhabited area with no cellular coverage. However, the Aito M9 was equipped with Huawei's Xinghe Communication System, featuring 360-degree satellite connectivity.
During the emergency situation, the driver was able to transmit precise GPS coordinates to emergency services using the M9's satellite-based eCall function. This vital information initiated the rescue operation, which saw a rescue team from Delingha city dispatched to reach the stranded vehicle.
The rescue team traversed three mountains and navigated 100 kilometres of unpaved roads, maintaining satellite voice communication with the driver for 61 minutes during the 3.5-hour journey. This communication was crucial, as it allowed the team to stay updated on the driver's condition and navigate effectively to their location.
Huawei's Xinghe Communication technology is described as the industry's first autonomous intelligent in-vehicle communication solution with earth-satellite network capabilities. In areas without cellular coverage, the vehicle's satellite phone allows users to make calls and share network connectivity with mobile devices.
The Maextro S800, released this year, also features a similar system, the Xinghe Communication System. This system, debuted in the S800, includes features like network switching and map preloading based on predicted signal strength, along with a vehicle-mounted satellite communication system extending signals up to 30 meters beyond the vehicle.
China Telecom has partnered with six automakers, including Seres, BYD, and Geely, to launch six satellite-connected vehicle models. While the Aito M9 was the first to successfully execute a rescue operation, it is not the only vehicle equipped with Huawei's Xinghe Communication System.
The Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve, where the rescue operation took place, is recognized as China's largest uninhabited area and the third largest in the world. The western section of Hoh Xil is completely uninhabited, making incidents like the one described above particularly challenging.
The launch of the 2025 Aito M9 and the successful satellite communication rescue operation highlight the potential of this technology to save lives in remote and uninhabited areas. As more vehicles are equipped with similar systems, we can expect to see more stories of rescue and survival in the future.
