Unemployment strife escalates in Garrahan: Residents align with Hospital Posadas' joblessness concern

Tackling the Issue at National Hospital Dr. Alejandro Posadas

Tensions are mounting at the National Hospital Dr. Alejandro Posadas, Morón, as resident doctors call for a meeting to discuss their dwindling incomes. Over 600 residents, under the National Ministry of Health, are facing a potential strike next week if their demands aren't met. As Garrahan residents continue their indefinite strike, residents at Posadas are gearing up for a battle.

In a meeting last week, the Posadas residents were offered an analogous bonus, but the figure pales in comparison to the $500,000 announced by the government for Garrahan residents. This does little to alleviate the concerns of the medical professionals, who are voicing their discontent over the inequality in remuneration within the same National Residency Program. Furthermore, the bonus is not intertwined with their salary.

The crux of the issue lies in the disparities in payments across hospitals, and as a result, the residents have issued an urgent plea and warned of a forceful strike if their demands aren't addressed by Monday, June 9.

Yesterday, residents from various hospitals and health centers across Buenos Aires, both national and city-owned, convened a virtual assembly. The outcome was the decision to participate in tomorrow's (4J) protest in front of Congress. The Garrahan Resident Assembly also confirmed a second mobilization, slated for June 10, at the National Ministry of Health headquarters.

Meanwhile, Garrahan's interns have decided to go on a 48-hour strike, commencing tomorrow, pressing for a 50% recomposition of the internship fees and payment for high complexity.

The residents at Garrahan have been on an indefinite strike for some time now, as the National Ministry of Health has presented them with no proposals for salary recomposition. Instead, they've offered a non-remunerative bonus drawn from the hospital's own resources, which does not form part of their basic salary or bonuses.

The accompanying staff at Garrahan, including the Association of State Workers (ATE) and the Association of Professionals and Technicians (APyT), support these resident doctors' demands. They've announced that a strike with a mobilization to Plaza de Mayo is under consideration for tomorrow. The National Civil Personnel Union (UPCN) has initiated discussions with the area authorities and Garrahan to improve the income of all workers.

In the midst of the ongoing mandatory conciliation and a contentious assembly, the majority of staff at Garrahan have voiced support for a strike, set to commence on Thursday, with a mobilization to Plaza de Mayo. Ambulatory care appointments will be rescheduled during this strike period, but urgent care and hospitalizations will remain guaranteed.

In the interim, it's worth noting that the number of administrators at Garrahan does not exceed the number of full-time doctors, as previously reported. The secondary concern revolving around the overpopulation of administrators has been clarified, and there is no misalignment in staff allocations.

Let's hope that the upcoming negotiations yield satisfactory outcomes for all parties involved, ensuring the well-being of our healthcare professionals and maintaining the quality of care for patients. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding saga.
