Updates arriving on Nano Cortex, as requested by numerous gamers: New features unveiled by Neural DSP
The NanOS 2.1.0 update for the Neural DSP Nano Cortex has brought a series of exciting improvements, most notably the addition of tap tempo controls and several MIDI enhancements.
In the world of compact, gig-ready rigs, the Nano Cortex now stands out with even more versatility. The tap tempo controls are integrated in two ways:
On the pedal itself, holding Footswitch I enters Tap Tempo mode, with its LED blinking at the current tempo. You can set the tempo by pressing Footswitch I repeatedly. Pressing Footswitch II exits Tap Tempo mode. When MIDI clock is received, Footswitch I’s LED flashes blue, indicating synchronization.
Via the smartphone app (iOS/Android), the tempo menu now includes a tap pad for rhythm tapping, precise BPM numerical entry, and an option to select between global or preset-specific tempos. It also allows selection of external MIDI clock sources (USB MIDI or TRS MIDI).
Additionally, the Nano Cortex can now receive MIDI CC messages to control tap tempo, bypass individual device slots, expression pedal position, and tuner on/off.
Other improvements included in NanOS 2.1.0 are: - IR Loader bypass for specific outputs - MIDI Thru functionality (passing MIDI from TRS input to USB output) - USB playback volume adjustment - Input and output mute options for re-amping workflows and DAW monitoring - Keeping reverb and delay trails on bypass (when 4-preset mode is off) - General bug fixes and performance optimizations
These tap tempo and MIDI control features greatly enhance the Nano Cortex’s usability, addressing earlier user requests for integrated tempo control. The Nano Cortex, a modeler by Neural DSP, now joins the ranks of devices offering tap tempo controls.
The Nano Cortex, the younger sibling to the Quad Cortex, launched in 2024, continues to make waves in the market of smaller-sized amp modelers. The latest update aims to bolster its position, as fresh competition emerges, such as Mooer's AI-equipped modeler that can profile a player's gear, similar to the Nano Cortex.
In April, a significant free firmware update was released for the Nano Cortex, adding 47 new effects and improving control over the signal chain. However, tap tempo functionality was not included in that update. Now, with the NanOS 2.1.0 update, the Nano Cortex offers even more functionality for musicians on the go.
