Upgraded imaging features of iPhone 17 collection unveiled: Fusion Camera, Center Stage, and 48 Megapixel mode detailed

The tech giant Apple has announced its latest iPhone 17 series, introducing a new lineup of devices that boast the innovative 'Fusion Cameras'. This groundbreaking technology promises to elevate the smartphone photography experience to unprecedented heights.

The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models come equipped with an ultra-wide camera capable of cropping from 0.5x relative zoom up to 1x zoom. The Pro models, including the iPhone 17 Pro Max, take a step further with a 24mm wide-angle camera, a 13mm ultra-wide camera, and a 100mm zoom camera, simulating a 200mm lens.

Each model in the iPhone 17 family, including the iPhone Air, features a new selfie camera with a square sensor, ensuring consistent performance whether held vertically or horizontally.

The high-end iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models are equipped with a 48MP telephoto camera, a feature absent in the standard iPhone 17. The Pro models also offer a 4x telephoto camera with a zoom range from 4x to 8x, while the iPhone 17 utilises interpolated zoom from 2x to 10x.

Apple's Fusion Cameras offer users the flexibility to capture images at 12MP, 24MP, or 48MP, with the option to switch between 12MP and 24MP for standard images by adjusting settings within the Camera section of the phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and other high-resolution camera phones can achieve similar results through sensor cropping, a technique also employed by very high-end cameras like the Leica Q3.

The iPhone 17 series cameras, when using Fusion zoom levels, produce images with 12 million pixels of information without digital interpolation. The 48MP main camera on the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro comes with a 2x option that crops into the central 12MP of the 48MP sensor, producing a 12MP image with no lost information.

The new selfie controls on the iPhone 17 series are manually accessible with on-screen buttons, and the selfie camera has automatic switching between portrait and landscape mode depending on the number of subjects detected in the frame, making group photos easier.

The iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be available in stores on September 19. With the introduction of the Fusion Cameras, Apple continues to push the boundaries of smartphone photography, promising an exciting new era for mobile photographers.
