Vaping Linked to Lung Ailments: Unveiling Health Concerns Over Electronic Cigarette Use

Electronic cigarettes and vaping, commonly considered harmless alternatives to smoking, have raised concerns over their long-term effects on health, particularly among children and young adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that e-cigarettes are the most used tobacco product among U.S. middle and high school students in 2022, with over 2.55 million students using them.

Research has linked vaping to serious respiratory illnesses, chronic lung conditions, and other health issues. The United States experienced an EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury) outbreak, with more than 2,800 hospitalizations and 68 deaths between March 31, 2019, and February 18, 2020. Most cases involved vaping products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and vitamin E acetate.

E-cigarettes heat liquid nicotine, chemicals, and flavorings to create an aerosol for inhalation, exposing users to harmful substances like heavy metals, which could cause irreversible damage to the lungs. The aerosols can also lead to inflammation, shortness of breath, and chronic conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchiolitis obliterans (popcorn lung).

Nicotine found in e-cigarettes is highly addictive, disrupts brain development, and increases the risk of cancer. Vaping's long-term effects on lung health indicate a potential for serious and possibly permanent damage, though research is still evolving compared to traditional smoking. Quitting vaping is challenging due to nicotine addiction, and there are concerns about its environmental impact.

The CDC advises against vaping for children, young adults, pregnant individuals, and anyone who is not currently smoking and trying to quit through proven methods authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Vaping is not a safe alternative to smoking nor an approved smoking cessation method by the FDA.
