Vehicles produced by BMW amounting to approximately 721,000 are being recalled due to fire hazard concerns.

BMW has announced a recall of more than 720,000 vehicles worldwide, including certain models from 2012 to 2018, due to a potential short in the engine water car connector that may increase the risk of a fire.

The recall includes 12 different BMW models, such as the X1, X3, X5 SUVs, Z4 Roadster, 228i, 228xi, 328i, 328xi Gran Turismo, 428i, 428xi, and 525i. BMW dealers will inspect and replace the water car and plug connector on the recalled vehicles, as necessary, and install a protective shield for the electrical connector to prevent fluid intrusion, free of charge.

The recall was conducted out of an abundance of caution on Aug. 6, following the investigation's confirmation of fluid dripping from the intake air hose as the root cause of the electrical short. During the investigation, BMW's engineers found that the sealing of the water car's electric plug connector could be shorted by fluid dripping from the engine intake air hose in rare cases.

BMW first became aware of the water car electrical connector problem in March after being contacted by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport regarding an incident on a BMW vehicle that involved a "thermal event." The company also became aware of another thermal event on a vehicle in the U.S. in January. In July, BMW was made aware of a second field U.S. incident, and discussions were held with the suppliers of the water car and the plug connector to analyze possible root causes.

As of Aug. 1, BMW is aware of approximately 18 customer complaints in the U.S. that may be related to the issue, but has not received any reports of accidents or injuries. The estimated percentage of the recalled vehicles with the defect is 1%, according to the NHTSA.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Oct. 4. It is important to note that the search results do not provide specific information about the suppliers of the water car and connector plug used by BMW in the affected vehicles.

The recalled vehicles' water cars are electronically controlled, allowing for more precise temperature control of the engine to improve performance. The impellers of these electronically controlled water cars are driven by an electric motor rather than a belt.

BMW dealers will contact affected customers to schedule appointments for the necessary repairs, and customers are encouraged to follow the instructions provided in the owner notification letter.
