Volkswagen Group's dominance in the German electric vehicle (EV) market has surged, with the company now holding a market share of around 46 percent in the first half of 2025. This significant leap has seen Tesla, the second-largest player last year with around 12 percent, fall to 3.6 percent and slipping to eighth place.

The ID.7, a Volkswagen Group model, now holds the top spot in the German electric vehicle market. The top six spots are occupied by Volkswagen Group models, with the core brand leading the way. Audi ranks fourth, and Mercedes-Benz trails in sixth place.

Tesla's fall from grace can be attributed to several factors. Volkswagen's stronger market share and model appeal, coupled with Tesla's aging Model 3 and Model Y, which have seen less favourable sales in Germany, have contributed to the shift. Competitors like Volkswagen and Chinese brands, such as BYD, are offering more affordable or better-suited options, appealing to a broader segment of German consumers.

Additionally, Tesla has faced a brand crisis in Europe, particularly in Germany, due to CEO Elon Musk’s controversial political activities. These actions have alienated some European buyers and sparked protests, impacting Tesla showrooms and overall brand image in Germany.

Production and supply disruptions have also played a role in Tesla's decline. The refreshed Model Y's retooling efforts have disrupted supply and contributed to falling sales. In contrast, Volkswagen’s established production infrastructure in Germany and Europe provides steadier availability and delivery of EVs.

Lastly, Volkswagen's longstanding presence and reputation in Germany give it a home advantage. German consumers tend to trust domestic brands more, especially amid increasing concern for local economic support and sustainability credentials linked to established manufacturers.

BMW, with its subsidiaries Mini and Rolls-Royce, comes in second with around 11 percent. The BMW X1 follows in seventh place, while the X1 is the highest-ranking model from BMW in the German electric vehicle market. The gap between BMW and Skoda in the German electric vehicle market was just 213 cars in the first half of the year.

As Volkswagen continues to dominate the German electric vehicle market, it remains to be seen whether Tesla can regain its lost ground. However, with the ongoing challenges facing Tesla and the strong performance of Volkswagen Group models, the outlook for the German electric vehicle market looks promising for Volkswagen.

  1. The dominance of Volkswagen Group in the German electric vehicle market, as reflected by their 46% market share, has profoundly influenced the industry's employment policy, as more EV manufacturers are likely to seek employment within the Group to capitalize on their success.
  2. The competition in the German electric vehicle market, particularly between Tesla and Volkswagen Group, has significantly impacted both companies' finance policies, as bigger market shares necessitate heavier investments in technology and energy to maintain competitiveness and sustain growth.
