Vulcan Energy, a pioneering company in sustainable lithium production, has commenced the production of V-Li0N, a battery-quality lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM), at its qualification plant, CLEOP. This marks an important step towards Europe's first fully domestically produced battery-quality LHM.

The production process at CLEOP employs adsorption-type direct lithium extraction (A-DLE) for a more environmentally friendly approach compared to traditional methods. The lithium used in V-Li0N production is sourced from deep, heated brines, and the process is fully electrified using electrolysis, further reducing emissions.

The qualification plant, initiated by Vulcan Energy in November 2024, is responsible for the production of battery-quality V-Li0N using sustainable methods. The material is intended for use in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) industry.

Vulcan Energy's Phase One Lionheart Project, aimed at providing integrated lithium and renewable energy production, is part of the company's Zero Carbon Lithium strategy. This strategy supports Europe's green energy transition by minimizing carbon footprint in the production process.

The production of V-Li0N at CLEOP also delivers geothermal renewable energy as a co-product for local communities. This renewable energy source is intended to benefit the local communities surrounding the qualification plant.

Vulcan Energy has already achieved its first battery-quality V-Li0N in January of the current year, and the process towards full product qualification is progressing well, according to Cris Moreno, Managing Director and CEO of Vulcan Energy.

Moreno also reported that discussions with offtake partners and industry experts continue to be constructive. This pre-qualification of V-Li0N with offtake partners ensures that the lithium produced meets the required standards for BEV batteries and supports the development of a resilient European supply chain for critical raw materials.

The production and dispatch of V-Li0N to offtake partners precedes the completion of Vulcan Energy's full commercial plant. This early production is a strategic move that demonstrates Vulcan Energy's commitment to the BEV industry in Europe and its goal to contribute to sustainable lithium production for the continent.

The Phase One Lionheart Project by Vulcan Energy is a significant contribution to sustainable lithium production for the BEV industry in Europe.
