Waymo's Teen Ride-Sharing Service Surges, Expands to Phoenix

Uber's teen ride-sharing service has seen a surge in popularity, with trips jumping by over 50% in the U.S. last quarter. Starting Tuesday, teens aged 14 to 17 in the Metro Phoenix area can use the service, thanks to a partnership with Waymo.

Waymo, Uber's self-driving car unit, is rolling out a new teen program. It will initially launch in the Metro Phoenix area, where Waymo's vehicles already operate. Teens can create a user profile linked to a parent's account, allowing them to hail a ride alone.

Waymo will provide specially trained support agents during rides, ready to assist teens and loop in parents if needed. Parents can also track their teen's trip status in real-time if the teen opts to share it.

Looking ahead, Waymo plans to expand its robotaxi service to Silicon Valley and parts of Los Angeles in 2024. It also aims to launch in Miami and Washington next year, and is currently gathering data in markets like New York City. However, Waymo may wait for rules to evolve before adding teen accounts in California.

Waymo's teen ride-sharing service has proven popular, with over 250,000 paid passenger trips per week, a five-fold increase from last year. The service is set to expand, offering teens more independence and convenience.
