Web posts featuring fabricated photos surge online, linking suspect in the Charlie Kirk murder investigation
The Washington County Sheriff's Office has released a new, clearer image of the suspect in the Charlie Kirk assassination case, aiming to aid in the ongoing investigation. The image, which has since flooded the internet, was initially created by the FBI and later enhanced by AI.
The image, released by the sheriff's office, bears a watermark of Grok, an AI assistant, indicating its origin. Sgt. Lucas Alfred, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, confirmed that the image was indeed enhanced by AI. However, he could not confirm the exact source from which the sheriff found the image.
The enhanced image offers a more detailed view of the suspect, although some features, such as the person's shirt logo and glasses, appear distorted. The suspect's skin, however, appears waxy and overly smooth in the image, a detail that has sparked interest among the public.
Sgt. Lucas Alfred stated that the sheriff himself posted the picture in an attempt to be helpful. To ensure clarity and accuracy, the post will be edited or added to accordingly. A disclaimer has been added to the post, stating that the photo "has been Denoised at a minimum."
Brandon Ahmiker, the director of the Emerging Technology Policy Lab, has expressed reservations about relying on AI-enhanced images. He stated that AI can predict or guess what enhanced visual information would look like, but he wouldn't rely on these images with any level of confidence.
The new images of the suspect are available on KUTV's news platform, offering the public a closer look at the individual suspected of the heinous crime. As the investigation continues, the public is encouraged to share any information that could help bring justice for Charlie Kirk.
