Week of April 25th for Tesla: Model Y now available for orders, customs issues, digital vehicle records on the horizon, Musk's greetings featured
Tesla has officially launched the refreshed Model Y in western markets, with deliveries commencing in the US and Germany starting from March. The entry-level version of the Model Y in the US is priced at around $46,630, while in Germany, the vehicle retails for approximately 45,970 euros (around $50,000).
The refreshed Model Y, known as the Juniper update, has undergone significant updates aimed at improving quality and driving dynamics, while maintaining a similar minimalist design to its predecessor. Notably, prices for the refreshed model have been reduced in some markets, such as Canada, where import routes have changed.
In an effort to make electric vehicles more affordable, Tesla is planning to launch an even more affordable version of the Model Y later in 2025. This new variant is expected to be at least 20% cheaper to build, a price point not yet reached by Tesla.
The European car industry is projected to see a significant shift towards electric vehicles, with electric car sales predicted to account for 24 percent of the market by 2025, a 10 percentage point increase from the previous year. However, sales of electric cars in Europe experienced a 5.9 percent decline in 2024, with Tesla recording a disproportionate decrease of 13.1 percent. Despite this, Tesla managed to increase its European sales in December by 5.9 percent against the general trend of electric car sales.
German car sales of electric vehicles are expected to rise by 75 percent to 666,000 units in 2025, with plug-in hybrids seeing an 8 percent increase. Domestic production of electric vehicles in Germany is also expected to reach another record, increasing by 24 percent to 1.7 million units including Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs).
Tesla's Gigafactory in Brandenburg is expected to produce the Model Y for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, with production increasing by around 40 percent to 287,000 electric vehicles in 2025. The initial availability of the new Model Y in the west is limited to a "Launch Series" equipped with a large battery and all-wheel drive.
While Tesla is among the manufacturers that have filed a lawsuit against EU tariffs on their electric vehicles, the company's relationship with German politics has been a topic of discussion. Musk made a public appearance at the AfD's election campaign kick-off in Halle, expressing pride in German citizenship and urging a focus on the future rather than the past. However, this support has not deterred criticism, and two activist groups recently projected images of Musk's controversial salute and the word "Heil" onto the facade of Tesla's German factory, advising against buying the brand's electric cars.
Lease rates for the Model Y Long Range RWD in the US are currently around $399 per month, a moderate increase from the previous $349. The previous Model Y remains available in the west, with four variants on the European market.
In China, the new Model Y is available as the base version, and the price is only slightly higher than before, with the previous model no longer available. Tesla was able to reduce the rate for electric vehicles from its Shanghai factory from an initial 9 percent to 7.8 percent.
