Weeks-long DDoS assault on Byond game engine, allegedly instigated by an aspiring Bond antagonist, aiming to compel it to adopt open-source platform: 'Assaults on Byond servers reflect your stubbornness'

An obscure game engine, Byond, has been targets of a prolonged distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, according to a report by MassivelyOP, now into its third week. The attack appears to be orchestrated by an unidentified group claiming to represent the international free and open-source software community, as stated in a now-deleted Reddit post.

The post demands that the creator of Byond, LummoxJR, opens the software's source code to make it open-source. The strongly worded message warns of the attacks' persistence until the creator complies with their demands.

While the claim's legitimacy remains uncertain, it appears doubtful as a justifiable reason for the sustained attacks. In a separate Reddit thread, users have suggested alternative reasons for the attack, mostly speculating that it stemmed from personal disputes or internet-induced fury. LummoxJR hinted at rumors concerning the attack's origin but stated it was not directly related to Byond or its development.

The Byond website remains inaccessible, with ongoing efforts to counteract the DDoS attacks, yet no estimated time for full restoration has been provided in the latest update. In a response posted on May 23, LummoxJR acknowledges dealing with the ongoing issue but maintains a positive perspective, encouraging everyone to show each other extra patience and respect during these challenging times.

In the interim, parts of the Byond platform, such as bug reports and downloads, are being temporarily moved to Discord for user accessibility. The development of Byond is not halted, and users can continue utilizing the software.

Based on the available information, it remains unclear if the DDoS attacks correspond to a formal demand for the Byond engine to be open-source from an organized international group. DDoS attacks can have multiple motivations, such as disrupting services, protests, or serving as cover for other malicious activities. The precise reason behind the current DDoS attacks on Byond remains undetermined.
