Westwater Resources Confirms Approval of Patent for Kellyton Graphite Factory

Westwater Resources, an energy technology and battery-grade natural graphite development company, has announced that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a patent application related to methods of purifying graphite at the Kellyton Graphite Plant. This patent covers innovative techniques aimed at purifying graphite produced at the Kellyton facility, a key step to enhance the quality and commercial viability of their graphite products.

The Kellyton Plant's purification methods, now patented, form part of Westwater's efforts to supply high-purity graphite for battery-grade applications. This patent approval strengthens Westwater's intellectual property portfolio and competitive position in the U.S. graphite and battery materials market.

The patent application was filed by Westwater Resources in August 2021, and the PTO's examination of the application is now complete. John W. Lawrence, Westwater's Chief Administrative Officer, General Counsel, and Secretary, stated that the company has diligently worked with the PTO for over 4 years regarding this patent application.

This significant milestone comes amid industry moves such as the imposition of steep U.S. anti-dumping duties on Chinese graphite imports, positioning Westwater’s U.S.-based graphite production as increasingly competitive in the domestic market.
