Mrs. Janet Ohene-Frempong, wife of the renowned sickle cell disease advocate, Professor Kwaku Ohene-Frempong, made headlines for donating a hefty sum to two Ghanaian sickle cell clinics: Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH). The goods included stationery and refreshments for children attending the clinic, all in honor of her late husband on World Sickle Cell Day 2023.

World Sickle Cell Day, officially recognized by the UN in 2008, is celebrated every June 19 to increase public awareness and understanding of sickle cell disease and its challenges. This day is a chance for individuals, groups, and organizations to come together and offer hope to those suffering from the disease. One such pillar in the global sickle cell community is the late Prof. Ohene-Frempong, whose impacted countless lives both nationally and internationally.

Madam Awo Twumasi, a mother of a teenager with sickle cell disease, shared her heartfelt gratitude for Prof. Ohene-Frempong's legacy. She explained, "KOF's determination and passion live on, bringing a smile to every child's face through this donation to the Sickle Cell Association of GARH. These books, coloring materials, and items will greatly improve the lives of sick children who may be in distress or experiencing a sickle cell crisis at the clinic."

Prof. Ohene-Frempong, affectionately known as "KOF," made a considerable impact on the sickle cell community by introducing newborn screening in sickle cell disease to Africa and Ghana. He pioneered 12 sickle cell disease treatment centers in regional hospitals across Ghana through his partnership with Novartis and Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA).

As the President of the Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana and National Coordinator of the Newborn Screening Program for Sickle Cell Disease, KOF was also an Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania and Director Emeritus of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at CHOP. His accomplishments and contributions to the sickle cell disease community were extensive, and his legacy continues to influence the lives of individuals with the disease worldwide.

Mrs. Ohene-Frempong, inspired by her husband's dedication, vows to continue his work. She stated, "My husband devoted 50 years of his medical career to ensuring as many people with sickle cell disease were kept alive as possible. Although he is no longer with us, I will work alongside others to see that persons living with sickle cell disease receive the quality care they deserve."

Prof. Ohene-Frempong's vast contributions to the sickle cell disease community should not be overshadowed by his death. His tireless efforts have brought hope and change to countless lives, improving the lives of people with sickle cell disease by promoting early detection, quality healthcare, and access to disease-modifying medications.

In light of KOF's unwavering commitment to the sickle cell community, the Sickle Cell Association of Ghana, headed by Madam Awo, is determined to continue his mission. They plan to advance newborn screening in Ghana, strengthen partnerships with global healthcare organizations, and make available affordable treatments such as hydroxyurea to those in need.
