Will Horizon Secure a Place in the Spotlight on Movie Screens?
In the ever-evolving world of triple-A gaming, the Horizon series, spearheaded by the major women-led character Aloy, stands as a beacon of diversity. Guerrilla Games, the mastermind behind the franchise, has given PlayStation a first-party franchise that is primarily driven by Aloy's relationships with women.
The Horizon series, known for its robot animals and bonkers, yet logical twists, has managed to endure despite competition from bigger games like Fortnite and other crazy games. However, it sometimes feels like an underdog among the PlayStation pantheon due to its differences from first-party peers like Epic Games.
Horizon Zero Dawn, released in February 2017, three days before the Nintendo Switch and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, quickly gained a reputation. It has been compared to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us in terms of persistence and frequency of reminders. Both critically and commercially well-received, the game has been compared to an 'industry plant' boosted by PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst.
Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, have tried to command attention, but their momentum was undercut by the release of other popular games like Elden Ring, a gamechanger from FromSoftware, which dominated much of the conversation, releasing just a week after Horizon Forbidden West.
Despite these challenges, PlayStation is making efforts to grow the Horizon franchise. A third single-player game is in the works, along with a VR game, multiple rumored multiplayer spinoffs, a Lego spinoff game, and a PlayStation 5 re-release of the first game.
However, there are risks involved. The future of Horizon games being remastered and remade for half a decade is a possibility. Additionally, the director for the Horizon franchise film by Guerrilla Games has yet to be announced. The Netflix series for Horizon was pivoted into a full-on film due to abuse allegations against showrunner Steve Blackman.
The future of the Horizon franchise, amidst the anticipated future of Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, DC Universe, and Doctor Who releases, remains exciting and uncertain. Yet, with its unique blend of storytelling and gameplay, the Horizon series continues to captivate players and promises to push the boundaries of gaming further.
